Welcome to The Very Rich Hours, where you can find postings of each day’s sunset, which I’ve been painting since January 1, 2006. This journal is named for the 15th-century illuminated manuscript Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

Most of these paintings are as seen from the same place, facing the Blue Ridge, north of Charlottesville, Virginia.

There was some disharmony recently between my browser and the server; the place to see any missing entries is via the Facebook page. “Like” The Very Rich Hours on Facebook and you’ll see each day’s sunset painting in your timeline.

Shine Out – Sunset, Thursday, 3 July 2014

William Van Doren, SHINE OUT. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on Arches, 17 x 23.

Heavy storms had just come through ... the vantage point here is a little bit north of my usual spot, with our local Piney Mountain in front.

Conjunction Junction – Sunset, Sunday, 22 June 2014

William Van Doren, CONJUNCTION JUNCTION. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on Arches, 17 x 23.

Possibly a redundant title (although it wasn’t, in the original context), but, in any case ... it’s all connected.

Solstice Behind the Scenes – Sunset, Saturday, 21 June 2014

William Van Doren, SOLSTICE BEHIND THE SCENES. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on Arches, 17 x 23.

A few days around the summer solstice is the only time the sun sets almost as far north as our little local Piney Mountain. In all honesty, although the sun appeared for a while about 45 minutes before sunset, after that everything clouded up and I couldn’t see it at all. But I decided not to let a little thing like that get in the way of a full and accurate description.

Fire and Rain – Sunset, Tuesday, 2 July 2013

William Van Doren, FIRE AND RAIN. Sunset from Stony Point, Albemarle County, Va. Oil on watercolor block, 13 x 19.

It had been raining for hours and would keep on raining all evening and all night. When I went out at sunset, this is not what I expected.
