Directions to “Moment & Horizon: The 365 Sunsets of 2010”

Directions are necessary, both for Woodberry Forest School and then within Woodberry to the gallery, because Mapquest apparently takes you to an old entrance that leads to a washed-out bridge on the Rapidan, where you will stare mournfully into the dark rushing waters and start singing a very sad song, perhaps Pat Boone's “Moody River”. Then, within Woodberry, there are no address numbers to fix on.

If you need to get your own directions, at least to the entrance to Woodberry, use the intersection of Rt 15 and Rt 622, then follow “Directions to Baker Gallery” below.

The reception is Friday, January 14, 5:30–7:30, and the exhibit is up until the end of February. Gallery hours are 9–5 Monday through Friday and 1–5 Saturday and Sunday. In addition to “Moment & Horizon” I also have an exhibition in the adjacent Upper Walker Gallery: “Tabula Rosa” (a new series of 12 very, very red paintings) and the three largest canvases from my 2009 inauguration day series.

From the North via I-95 and Fredericksburg
Take I-95 south to Fredericksburg. Take Exit 130 to go west on Rt 3 a little over 13 miles. Turn left (at a traffic light) on Rt 20 toward Orange. Go 21.7 miles to a slight right on Byrd Street (Business Rt 20). After 0.5 mile, turn left from Byrd onto Main Street and go 0.1 mile to the main traffic light and turn right on Rt 15. Go 4.3 miles from the light on 15, and look for the green state highway sign for Woodberry Forest School, at Route 622 (Woodberry Drive). Turn right into Woodberry Forest and follow the directions below to Baker Gallery.

From the North via Route 29
Take I-66 West to U.S. 29 South at the Gainesville/Warrenton exit (Exit 43) toward Culpeper. At Culpeper, take the Rt 15 South exit – there’s a green state highway sign for Woodberry Forest School – and go about 15 miles. Turn left into Woodberry Drive (Route 622) and follow the directions below to Baker Gallery.

From Charlottesville (about 45 minutes)
Take US 29 North about 25 miles. Turn right on Rt 230 and follow for about 10 miles until it ends at a stop sign. Turn left on Rt 15 for 0.8 mile. Turn right into Woodberry Drive (Route 622) and follow the directions below to Baker Gallery.

From Richmond
Take I-64 west to Exit 136 (Gordonsville/Palmyra) for Rt 15 North toward Gordonsville. Continue through the Gordonsville traffic circle to Orange. Keep following signs for 15 (in Orange, this will involve a right at a stop sign followed by a left at the main traffic light in the town). Go 4.3 miles from the light on 15, and look for the green state highway sign for Woodberry Forest School, at Route 622 (Woodberry Drive). Turn right into Woodberry Forest and follow the directions below to Baker Gallery.

From Ashland
Follow Rt 33 all the way til it joins Rt 22 near Louisa. Go left on E. Main (Rts 33/22) at Louisa for 0.9 mile, then stay straight to leave 33 and go on Ellisville Drive. Follow Ellisville Drive 8.6 miles until it changes to Marquis Road (at Vawter Corner). Continue 1.2 miles until Marquis Road forms a T at Monrovia Road/Rt 612; turn left on Monrovia Road and take it 9.4 miles until it ends at Rt 20, Berry Hill Road. Go left on Rt 20/Berry Hill Road for only 0.05 mile then take a slight right onto Byrd Street (Rt 20 Business).

Directions to Baker Gallery
After turning in to Woodberry, go straight (respecting the speed bumps because they really hit hard above 15 mph) approximately 1 mile until the road finally climbs and it seems like you’re going to run straight into the side of a large brick building. You curve to the right and it may seem like you’re going through a small parking lot, but keep going, past a big flagpole set in the center of the road. About 0.1 mile after the flagpole, take the first road on the left – it has a sign, Craigie Rd – and the Walker Fine Arts Center is the first large building on the right. There are some parking spaces across the road from the Center (except a few are marked reserved for Infirmary); otherwise the parking lot is down on the right just beyond the building.

The best entrances to use are either the lower one adjacent to the parking lot, which will lead via stairs to street (gallery) level, or, from street level, the door on the left as you face the building.
